Eagle's Nest

In German, Hitler's retreat centre on the mountain is called Kehlsteinhaus. It was built in 1939 and had to be completed in 13 months in order to be finished for his 50th birthday. The main use of the building was to show off to other political leaders. He had a few other buildings on the mountainside but all of them were bombed at the end of the war. This is the only building that was left standing. Hitler was actually afraid of heights and only went there about 13 times.

We drove up the same road Hitler did and walked through the tunnel leading to the elevator that took him up to the top. It still had the original panelling inside. After learning more of its history, we toured the building. It was strange to walk where he had walked, and we imagined what it would have been like.

Then we went outside to enjoy the beautiful view. The mountain is 1834 meters (6017 feet).
