Venice-Fascinating

We always thought of Venice as a city built on water with canals and gondolas. Who knew there was so much more to it! We learned so many interesting things. There are three parts to the city:
A. What we typically think of is actually 118 islands that are separated by canals. Every time you cross over a bridge, you are on a different island.
B. Part of Venice is also on the mainland.
C. There are also 80 islands that are on their own.

We also learned about Venice's history and why the people chose to live on the islands instead of the mainland. Tomorrow our tour guide will give us more information about Venice sinking and what they are doing about it. I will add that update here, if you want to check back.

Our day started with seeing the Danieli Hotel that was in the movie "Only You".  We had a few hours of free time, so we checked out the inside of that hotel, with its beautiful chandeliers, had a quick coffee in a cafe and wandered through the streets for a while. Then we spent some time in St. Mark's Square and were once again in awe as we walked through St. Mark's Cathedral.

After winning a coin toss, Cornie and I sat together at the back of the gondola and enjoyed the ride through the canal with a few friends. Once again the experience lived up to how we had imagined  it.

Then we headed off by boat to the island of Burano. Wow! This quaint little island with its colorful homes was beautiful. The people of this town are known for their lace and linens, all handmade. Shop after shop was filled with the most beautiful items. We both thought this would definitely be a place that Mom would love.

Our day ended with a glass blowing demonstration, another thing Venice is known for-more amazing talent.

We really enjoyed our time in Venice!
